Just joined so thought I would introduce myself and of more interest my bike.

I first got into bikes at around 14 I guess, a BSA bantam D7 scrambler which I swapped my pushbike for and enjoyed riding around the local woods.

A few years later after a number of different bikes my mates and myself ended up with a SP370 & XT500, these were pretty much worthless at the time but suited us perfectly for ragging around the local woods and fire breaks.

Once we got to around 20 the draw of cars and women overtook our simple biking pleasures, plus the police took our details so these bikes were parked up, well left next to a friends garage under a tarpaulin until 3 weeks ago, 30 years later, we had to cut a tree down to get them out!

The SP was siezed, sold this as is last week to fund the rebuild of the XT :)

Amazingly a clean of the carb, took a few goes, flick of the points and a bit of fiddling with the wiring I had sparks and fuel, a few kicks later on and she lives :)

Plan is to strip right back and do a sympathetic restoration, I,ll start a post in that area another day, I am not a concourse person but would like to see this back on the road later this year.

It will need spokes, maybe forks, lights, exhaust and registering but the basis is sound, smokes a lot on startup I expect the sump is

full of oil and clutch very very stiff, I think this was slipping when parked up so hopefully £500 should get me up and running.

I purchased a XT650 two years ago, ran this for two weeks then sold, nasty thing IMHO, this simple 78 XT500 already feels nicer to sit on even in its current state.

Thanks for the welcomes, started to unpick it so I have been googling tumbling abrasive cleaners and bought a lump of zinc so I can reclaim as much as possible, so far everything is unbolting once I have brushed the exposed threads and doused in oil.
