I got a bit bored yesterday so spent a happy afternoon taking to bits the engine that I had only rebuilt a few months ago. Problem is that it looks tatty - goes very well, but compared to its powdercoated brother it looks like it has been around for a good forty years (well 38 in fact).

Anyway (BB take note) - it will soon be heading off to PORL at Redditch. :)

Question I have is the original engine colour black - Satin, Matt or gloss ?

Thought I would do this one up properly and think a 79 would be satin black would it not ?

Satin it is...according to my '79, but I would still defer to Buba over Yamaha...

Give REP ( Redditch electro plating ) a try if you need any of your Allen head screws and other fittings plated. They can plate with olive green passivate as the originals would have been. Real nice guys who are all bike mad and know Paul at Redditch powder coatings well.!!

Hey Falky
I also like the stainless cap heads. Any chance you would like to do my TT motor.
I like you style when stripping a motor, :th-)

Cheers Kevin ! It's the rebuild that takes a bit more time, but those chinese takeaway dishes come in handy ! I'll do your TT no problem as long as you take care of the bus fare :)

Yes, satin for me too. I also went down the stainless route for the fasteners, both for engine and other places if possible. Spent many happy hours skimming the markings off to get a smooth finish on the heads :D

I'll be off to Redditch soon too - another Honda Monkey!

Hi BB.....thanks for that. I noticed that this engine has suffered the usual fate with the drive socket cover pillars - usually one is broken by a PO but this engine has the top one damaged also. I see Kedo make a repair "kit" but didn't think it looked that useful to be honest. I'm thinking of trying to find someone who could rebuild the pillar with mag alloy - not sure how possible that is and wondered if any of you had any experience of trying to do that. It would be nice to have it repaired before taking it to Powder coating. Previously I had made a fix with epoxy resin which did work, but not a "proper" job :)

Hi Dick,
What, if anything, is close on the inside of the rear cover fixing? Just wondering if there is room to put a short piece of threaded bar on the outside of the casing and hold it in place from the inside with a short countersunk screw and a drop of Loctite.

Not so sure about the front fixing, by the oil pipe. Is there any thread left for purchase or has it broken away?

When are you off to Redditch?
