I just want to confirm the year of the two bikes I have one is obvious ...I think (1978) the serial # are 1E6-3167XX the other is 1F6-3004XX The colors are white and crystal silver but I dont think you can determine that from the S/N hope this is the right place to post this.

From info I have the 1E6 3167xx is 1978 XT500E. My info doesn't list a 1F6 though - maybe the F is an E ? There are those on here who will know more than me on this topic though

The plot thickens...

1F6 is an LB80 I believe.

http://www.netbikes.com.au/id/yam/yamaha_id.html

Compare with the 1E6 stampings, are they identical, shape and size of letters, radius of corners etc. Is the engine number on a 'splined' or smooth surface.

Well indeed.... I will have a second look, from memory it is on a splined surface I will have a look but that could be a couple weeks unless I get some one to send me a photo. Thanks for the excellent link that should do the trick, but what the heck is an LB80? 1980 lousy bike?

Something like this, at least the rear light and flashers look familiar :D

haha...nice one. I found that on the same website as well, but thought I would be polite ! I had an XT from S Africa many years ago and the engine number was on a flat shiny surface so the original had ben ground off. A new number had been punched into the surface. However, I think that the new number (not a Yamaha number) must have been officially punched in as the police checks were all OK and the same number was on all the paperwork. There is a post on here about it somewhere....

1E6-3167xx is a 1979 XT 500 for Canada, while 1E6-3004XX (never heard about XT 500 1F6) is a 1978 model, also this for Canada.
